There was the need to form the company especially after the mainstream media started to portray the image of the community negatively. With 23 years of service up to this year, the organization in conjunction with other auxiliaries such as Koori Radio has undergone various positive transformations such as maintaining the community cohesiveness. At the same time, the company has also faced numerous challenges such as lack of adequate finance to run its intended operations. The company's vision is to be a preeminent media and arts corporation whose primary role is to inspire, initiate, and identify talents among the Aboriginal and other indigenous people. Additionally, the company aim s to create a thorough understanding and appreciation of culture in Australia and other parts of the world. The mission of Gadigal Information Service Aboriginal Corporation is to entertain, promote positive relationship among people, and eradicate harmful stereotype. (Podber 2014, p. 147). Various Australian government departments sponsor the non-profit making organization. Some of the departments include Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations among others. Additionally, the organization also receives support from non-governmental corporations and individuals. The parties mentioned above provide financial, material, and other philanthropic support to the team. The support enables the company to achieve its set mission and objectives. Overview of the Placement Role While I was a volunteer at the Corporation, I participated in several core businesses of the Koori Radio. For example, I took part in radio script writing. Here, I wrote varieties of radio scripts such as news and interview scripts. In preparation of the scripts, I applied the previous knowledge which I had gained from the class. Coming with an excellent script involved picking the best, newsworthy sound clips and then composing a clear and useful text representing the material gathered. At the practical, I learned that writing is very fundamental since it is the one which comprehends the audio. I also learned that for one to capture the gathering, use of standard dialect was vital. The other role which I participated in while on placement was community reporting. The absolute most critical advantages of community reporting include diversity, more prominent profundity and setting of the news scope, and a more grounded comprehension of the different communities which make up a particular survey range. While undertaking this role together with my group members, I realized that internal communication was fundamental. This is because, as members of the team, we were required to report the changes and progress of new elements. Additionally, I also took part in creating awareness on various community youth issues such as drug and alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancies among other contemporary issues. To address these youth issues, we took several measures such as partnering with the local organizations such as churches to advise the young people on the importance of abstaining from actions which can lead to teenage pregnancies and abuse of drugs. Apart from churches, we also collaborated with other multiagency corporations who provided the financial support. I took part in concerts and dramas whose aim was to sensitize the youth on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. Awareness Gained on Social Justice Issues and Economic and Social Effects of Modern Life Social justice is the practice of according people in the community equal chances, goods, and services, fair value and participation in decision-making process. (Asumah 2014, p. 241). As a volunteer, I learned that social justice issues could occur either locally, regionally, nationally or globally. These problems occur as a result of unequal distribution of resources and wealth. It also happens in situations where individuals are treated differently based on the skin color, race, religion or sexual orientation. (Farooq 2015, par. 6). While in placement, I learned that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander have been facing multiple social issues ranging from reconciliation, self-determination, resource development, and indigenous rights. According to various studies carried out by Australian Human Rights Commission, the above-mentioned social justice issues have remained unresolved due to lack of incorporation of social justice elements in addressing them. Modern life has had various economic and social effects among the Aboriginal community. Modern life comes with a variety of economic benefits such as increased access to basic financial services such as credit facilities. There has been an increase in Aboriginal businesses which have been doing great in the Australian economy. (Partington 2013, p. 182). On the other hand, a good number of the Aboriginal community have been financially excluded therefore cannot be able to access the primary financial services. (Korff 2015, par. 1). This exclusion has led to financial illiteracy in the community. When I compared the cost of living in urban areas and homelands, I found out that the living costs especially food expense is very high in homelands compared to urban areas. The increase in costs of living is due to lack of infrastructure. Social life in the community has taken a different route as a result of globalization. There has been a mass movement of Aboriginal community to urban areas. The settlement has led to the integration of the local culture and European way of life. Accessibility to better health facilities and education has been made possible through cultural integration. On the other hand, modern life has also contributed to some social ills in the society such as suicide. Culturally, the Aboriginal language is almost going into extinction. Before colonization, there were more than 250 Aboriginal languages. But as at now, 60 languages are considered healthy. Awareness Gained on the Responsibility of Individuals to the Wider Community Based on the observation, the responsibility of individuals to the community ranges from obligation, respect, participation, and cooperation. It involves participating or taking part in the development process of the community which one lives. Cleaning the towns, rendering services to the elderly, organizing events, and caring for children without parents are examples of individual responsibility to the community. Personal responsibility also involves refraining from actions which are not considered useful to the community. For example, stealing and killing are immoral activities. Respect to individuals goes in conjunction to their contribution towards the well-being of the society. (Blomback Kristoferson 2014, par. 3). My involvement with a not-for-profit organization has enabled me to experience a practical experience regarding the corporate social responsibility. Corporate social responsibility entails a variety of duties which the company has towards the community. (Cuvilceva 2012, p. 4). During the placement period, I participated in various community projects such as cleaning the towns, identifying and sponsoring local talents, taking part in community fundraising among other activities. The events were meant to create the company's image to the society. This practical approach has enabled me to increase my understanding of the roles and responsibilities of organizations to the local community. Personal, Ethical, Professional, and Spiritual Development Being a volunteer at the Gadigal Information Service has helped to improve my whole life ranging from personal, ethical, professional, ad spiritual development. Concerning personal growth, I have gained indispensable on-the-job training and counseling. Training and counseling have enabled me to achieve various aspects of personal growth. First, practice and advice have created a sense of awareness to me. I have been able to understand my beliefs, values, and purpose. Secondly, training has enabled me to improve my effectiveness and focus through prioritization of personal objectives. Additionally, I have been able to develop greater resilience which I consider valuable when handling situations under tough times. About moral development, I have gained knowledge concerning how am supposed to deal with various ethical problems which emanate in our daily lives. Moral development involves personal integrity and professional training which aims to focus on compliance. (Schwartz, Harris, T apper 2014, p. 128). The knowledge I have gained from the company will enable to apply ethical principals in making sound decisions both at work and outside work. I have also learned that being part of organization's mission requires one to understand the company's culture through training. Concerning professional development, I have been able to enhance my professional performance which has put me in a good position in the opportunity market. Spiritually, I have also gained a lot throughout my placement at Gadigal Information Service. I have been able to identify my core purpose in life. Additionally, I have also learned that spiritual development enables one to create a solid connection between various employees in the workplace. Relationships between workers on the job are usually due to sharing of common beliefs between the members. (Beheshtifar Zare 2013, p. 248). Business Communication Skills, Information Literacy and Interpersonal Skills The placement has enabled to develop my communication skills by putting me in a position where I can be able to differentiate between an opportunity and a glut. It has also improved by creativity. Today, I have the ability to break out an established pattern and look for the unexpected. Additionally, I have improved my collaboration which is a fundamental concept in business communication. About information literacy, the placement has enabled me to gain an understanding of how to find, locate the information, retrieve, locate, analyze, and utilize the information. Information literacy is vital since it enables individuals to become lifelong learners. (Hassani Nfissi 2015, par. 8). By the end of the training, I was able to comprehend the importance of interpersonal skills and how better communication affects our working relationships. Interpersonal skills play a great role in improving the performance of an employee in an organization. (Mitchell 2013, par. 1-5). The Importance of Not-For-Profit Organizations and their Role in the Community By the end of the placement period, my critical and analytical understanding of the importance and role of the not-for-profit organizations in the society had changed. Nonprofit corporations help provide services such as housing, cleaning, educating the community on their rights and responsibilities, and supporting the local community realize its potential. They also assist in preserving the culture and air out the interests of marginalized groups in the society. (Will Baker 2013, p. 1-3). The importance of the organizations also extends to the entire economy by providing employment opportunities and the increase in the GDP of the nation. In 2013, the corporations' jobs in Australia were 9.3% of the country's workforce. (Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies 2014, p. 2). Their roles include acting as an intermediary between the local people whom it is serving and the government.
